I haven not finished reading Jesus For President, but so far it seems like a very good read. Not your stereotypical “Christian” piece of literature. I was immediately drawn to the book by it’s youthful layout. It’s a book decked out and overridden with design; one of the things that is really attractive to me. Not only does the author have something to say, but is conscientious about expressing those words through images and art that make the reading very enjoyable.

I really like the art in this book, and it might be easy to think that I like the images more than the actual words themselves, but the book is a really good read. The language is bold and sophisticated, but easy to read and comprehendable at the same time. Claiborne puts many perspective of American and world politics into the spotlight; maybe a spotlight that is not (stereo)typical of today’s culture. It brings different views to many of the ordinary politics we see today. Claiborne captures the essence of the book very well in the subtitle: “Politics for Ordinary Radicals”. It’s interesting to see an analysis of the ways in which politics played a role in Jesus’ time, and the way in which He countered those politics with His very own. If any person is to be considered “radical”, Jesus might (but certainly) fit that idea.

Shane Claiborne lives even more radically than he writes. That makes me want to listen to him. We heard him speak briefly when we were at the convention in San Diego. I understand from someone who attended a seminar that I didn’t get to, that even when he’s in a panel discussion, he communicates (often through stories) in such a forthright, humble way that his radical words are also reconciling words.
